Há minas de onde se tira a prata, há lugares onde se refina o ouro. O ferro é tirado da terra, e das pedras se derrete o cobre. Os mineiros levam luz para debaixo da terra; eles exploram lugares profundos e ali, na escuridão, procuram minérios.

There are mines from which silver is taken away, there are places where gold is refined. The iron is taken from the earth, and from the stones the copper is melted. The miners carry light under the earth; they explore deep places and there, in the dark, seek ores.

Longe das cidades, em lugares por onde ninguém passa, eles abrem os poços das minas. E trabalham na solidão, pendurados e balançando de um lado para outro. Por cima deles, a terra produz trigo e por baixo está toda rasgada e esmigalhada. As suas pedras contêm safiras , e no seu pó se encontra ouro.

Away from the cities, in places where no one passes, they open the wells of the mines. And they work in solitude, hanging and swinging from side to side. Above them, the earth produces wheat and underneath it is torn and crumbled. Its stones contain sapphires, and in its powder gold is found.

As águias não veem o caminho que desce para as minas, e os falcões também não o conhecem. Os leões e outros animais ferozes nunca descem por esse caminho. Os homens cavam as rochas mais duras e cortam as montanhas até o chão. Eles furam túneis nas pedras, com olhos abertos para tudo o que é precioso. Eles cavam até chegar às nascentes dos rios e trazem para a luz o que estava escondido.

The eagles do not see the way down into the mines, and the hawks do not know it either. Lions and other ferocious animals never go down this path. The men dig the hardest rocks and cut the mountains to the ground. They bore tunnels on the rocks, with eyes open to all that is precious. They dig until they reach the springs of the rivers and bring to the light what was hidden.

Mas onde pode ser achada a sabedoria? Em que lugar está a inteligência? Os seres humanos não conhecem o valor da sabedoria e não a encontram neste mundo. O Oceano afirma: “Aqui não está”, e o Mar diz: “Aqui também não.” Ela não pode ser comprada com ouro, nem trocada por prata. Não se compra a sabedoria com o ouro mais puro, nem com pedras preciosas, como a ágata ou a safira . Ela vale mais do que o ouro ou o vidro; não se pode trocá-la por joias de ouro puro. Do coral e do cristal nem se fala; a sabedoria é mais valiosa do que as pérolas. O topázio da Etiópia não se compara com ela; e ela não pode ser comprada com o ouro mais puro.

But where can wisdom be found? Where is the intelligence? Humans do not know the value of wisdom and do not find it in this world. The Ocean says, "It is not here," and the Sea says, "Not here either." It can not be bought with gold, nor exchanged for silver. Wisdom is not bought with the purest gold, nor with precious stones, like the agate or the sapphire. It is worth more than gold or glass; it can not be exchanged for jewels of pure gold. Of the coral and the crystal neither is spoken; wisdom is more valuable than pearls. The topaz of Ethiopia does not compare with it; and it can not be bought with the purest gold.

De onde vem, então, a sabedoria? Em que lugar está a inteligência? Nenhum ser vivo pode vê-la, nem mesmo as aves que voam no céu. Até a Destruição e a Morte dizem: “Nós apenas ouvimos falar dela.” Só Deus conhece o caminho; só ele sabe onde está a sabedoria porque a sua vista alcança os lugares mais distantes do mundo; ele vê tudo o que acontece aqui na terra. Quando Deus regulou a força dos ventos e marcou o tamanho do mar; quando decidiu onde a chuva devia cair e por onde a tempestade devia passar; foi então que ele viu a sabedoria, e a examinou, e aprovou. E ele disse aos seres humanos: “Para ser sábio, é preciso temer o Senhor; para ter compreensão, é necessário afastar-se do mal.”

Where then does wisdom come from? Where is the intelligence? No living being can see it, not even the birds that fly in the sky. Even Destruction and Death say, "We only hear of it." Only God knows the way; only he knows where wisdom lies because his sight reaches the farthest reaches of the world; he sees everything that happens here on earth. When God regulated the strength of the winds and marked the size of the sea; when he decided where the rain should fall and where the storm should pass; it was then that he saw the wisdom, and examined it, and approved. And he said to human beings: "To be wise, you must fear the Lord; to have understanding, it is necessary to depart from evil. "
